"1974 Norton 850 Commando info needed" Fri May-16-08 11:51 AM by webmaster
I've got a Norton Commando that was given to me by a guy that owed me over a grand. I'd like to know if the frame and engine match and exactly what I have. The Frame has a plate on the neck that reads Mfg 12-73 311839 There's also a stamped number on the neck that reads 850 F107934 What threw me is the case number reads 311859 Which is close to the frame number but a ****59 engine compared to th ****39 frame. I'm guessing that this is a 1974 850 MK1 I've tried some of the contact info for getting ID's and haven't found a good address yet. Any info is appreciated and I don't mind paypalling a few bucks to get some straight info. It seems I've got a complete bike here with the exception of the front brake calliper and seat. Only 8,617 miles on her. Looks to have never taken apart. The numbers on the bottom of the barrel read 063850. A gorgeous bike that makes womens clothes fall off for some reason? Feel free to contact thru this site or call me..

Hi Bill The real Norton VIN is the 311xxx number on the aluminum plate. Depending on your government agency they may refuse to use it and may use the 850 F107934. It is up to you to convince them, but either way if you talk to norton people use the 311xxx number and they should know what vintagge bike you are talking about...1974. Curious about the number change on the engine, but who knows the history of the bike and when the engine got swapped? Normally they match the vin plate and the top of the gearbox#.
063850 is the raw casting # and tells nothing except it is an 850 barrel
