"Transmission Dipstick length? part # 40-1033"

I have a 71 b50 & am trying to figure out if I have enough oil in the transmission. The dipstick is gone & I have nothing but a plug. How long was the original dipstick from low to high? It's showing up as 40-1033 in my parts manual and I found one for $60 somthing dollars for a plastic part. $60 seems high for a plastic ruler. If I can just measure from the top of the case (top of threads?) to low & high mark I should be good.
