"Seeking to identify Norton 500"

My Dad has a 1962 Norton, purchased new in eastern Canada the same year and stored in a basement since '64 or so. While he has not given up on the idea of restoring and riding it, I suggested he should sell it (hey, I have a 23 year old 2 stroke Yamaha myself so this is not a greed thing, it runs in the family).

We could not identify the model. He says he bought it new as a 500 Super Sport Twin, which I cannot find reference to anywhere. It looks like a Dominator 88. I do not have a digitial photo.

Can anybody help us determine what model this is?

Mike

If it is a featherbed the frame will have a number on the right side frame gusset. (just to the rear of the primary )
the series will be the first 2 digits such as 20 for atlas or 18 for 650ss or 14 is a model 99, 16 is a nomad.... ect....
There will be a number on the right side of the engine if not butchered...
the basic VIN should match the engine

You have basicaly identified it.

From your description it is a Norton twin 500 Dominator 88SS

http://www.nortonownersclub.org/

Look at the model descriptions.

Not so common and a nice bike. Like Dave said the numbers on the drive side crankcase will identify the model. Probably 122 and an engine number around 101000 ??
