British Motorcycle History PDF Print E-mail

Bicycles had become a popular mode of transportation in Britian in the late 1800's. During the same time the internal combustion gasoline engine was being invented. Many designs of motorized bicycles appeared around Europe. They quickly evolved into the motorcycle and became a very popular mode of transportation that spread over Europe and America.

During the few years before the motorcyle industry was born moto enthusiasts in Britian built single and multiple cylinder motorized machines in every possible layout. Each one tried different combinations of design in the drive system with chain, shaft and belt drive for front and rear wheel drive. To handle the rough roads telescopic and girder forks were designed. Motor controls included kickstarts, electric starters, twist throttle, multiple gears, and more. Seating, fenders and stylish items distinguished the various models.

By 1900 engine technology was becoming dependable and engines were being mass-produced. Many of the small engines were designed to be fitted onto a motorcycle. British industry producing motorcycles soon appeared. These machines went through many evolutions until about 1977 when most of them ceased production for various reasons.

This web site is about those motorcycles and the people who restore and ride them. The Norton, BSA and Triumph are but a few of the British legacy machines we discuss on our forums. You can talk with thousands of other moto heads around the world. Many of them are working in their shop right now tinkering with their motorcycles.
