"Norton Commando banjo bolt leak"
|
This is a plea for advice from someone knowledgeable about Nortons. I own a beautiful 75 Norton 850 Commando interstate which I and my wife are taking to New Orleans next week (on a six-week ride). I changed the oil yesterday and pulled out the banjo bolt behind the oil reservoir to clean the mesh filter inside the reservoir. I put everything back together and now the banjo leaks badly (overnight without use it empties the reservoir to below where the banjo bolt enters it.) I emptied the reservoir, checked the bolt, the two crush washers on either side of the banjo and the hose attached to the banjo. I couldn't see any problems. I tightened the bolt as I usually do, fairly firmly, but resisting overtightening for fear of stripping the threads. It's a bloody mess.. Any suggestions? Robert Kroll 510- 524-1820

Your post wound up here instead of Tech Talk, which is why no one has probably responded. Did you replace the crush washers with new? If not, replace with new and tighten. Make sure the banjo to oil line is OK. Sometimes a rupture occurs at the banjo.

Robert,
The leak may not be related to the oil strainer. Check for cracks in tank itself especially at the bottom mount.
With 510 area code you're in the east bay. You should get in touch with the local club. See the website http://www.nortonclub.com David
