"what have I got here."

Does anyone know what year this motor might be, its an 850, the ser # doesn't match the frame which titles as a 73, the motor ser# is 300599 and to the left of the ser# out on a knuckle of the block is HM and under it, 921F. My frame title say 73 and on the bike it also says FC 10/72 is this the actual mfg date. The Ser# is 300336 model??? Any help would be appreciated..Kev

It sounds like you have a bitza, little bits a this and little bits a that.
mfg 10-72, and VIN 30XXXX is a MY 73.
The model is commando.
I could have been any body style available for that year.

I agree with Dave. The number 300559 was not likely manufactured in Oct '72. The 850 Commando numbers started at 300000, but according to Roy Bacon 850 production started April '73. You may have a 750 frame. You said the frame numbers don't match. A frame manufactured in Oct '72 would likely have a number above 220000 as that was the start and beginning month of '73 750 machines.

You have one of the first Mk 1 850 Commandos. These went on sale in the UK early in 1973. So they would have started making them in the fall of 1972.The Mk 1 was only made for one season by the fall of 1973, they were making my MK 2A 850 engine number 308xxx.

Best regards

Keith,

I've found several examples of incorrect or conflicting information regarding engine numbers corresponding to model years. I'm looking for hard documents or first hand (worked for Norton) information about Commandos. The NOC has what's left of the factory records for Commandos, but these don't go into '74. I would be greatful to know if you have anything.

Regards,

David
