Hi there I picked up a wheel from what I believe is a British bike probably a Norton from what I can tell. I need some expert help in identifying it please.

I'd guess a jap bike.
40 spoke yes but not all jap were 36
bolt on clamps...not norton... are the nut threads metric or british threads?
You should open up the wheel and look inside the brake for casting markings or number
