"cylinder barrel removal"

Trying to remove the cylinder barrel on my 1967 TR-6 to fix leaking pushrod tubes. Manual says to remove the 8 nuts and withdraw the cylinders, but mine wont budge. Looked at a sledge hammer - looked at delicate cooling fins - thought better of the idea. I put on the cylinder head and cycled the kick starter to see if cylinder pressure would do the trick, but no luck. Any ideas?

John
