"Norton non-speedo"

Hey! Putting an electric drill onto the rear of the speedometer/odometer cable and spinning it (new cable) has no effect in waking up a zero-pegged and paralyzed speedometer needle. So, I suppose it is possible to reason that the speedo is Kaput, right? Anyone got a fix for this or direction to go in. Tack works, wind in ears tells approximately how fast I'm going but I would like to track miles traveled. Is there a common fix for this bum gauge?? You have my eternal thanks. Norton 71 750 w/850

peace and grease
